Why Retire to the Philippines

Why, you say?

Because everything we need for our retirement is over there!

• the cost of living is affordable
• the climate is mild (not too hot/not too cold)
• living is “safe and secure” (like anywhere in the world)
• the people speak English, no need to learn a new language
• people are friendly, hospitable, warm and somewhat “Westernized”
• the main religion is Christian, so there are no dietary laws to observe
• the country is lovely and the night life in the city is alive
• so many more other reasons!

This little country seems to be the best place for retirement!

I am looking for a place for me and my husband Simon when we retire to the Philippines soon.

We are trying to make up our minds if we wanted city or rural living for retirement.  Personally, I prefer to live in rural areas, but Simon would like to check the city scene first before we make the final decision.

On the top of my agenda is finding a house/condominium to stay in Metro Manila for a couple of weeks.

METRO MANILA (National Capital Region)
Map courtesy of http://pinoygov.com/

Please remember:

  1. Metro Manila (also called National Capital Region or NCR) includes City of Manila, Caloocan, Las Piñas, Makati, Malabon, Mandaluyong, Marikina, Muntinlupa, Navotas, Pasay, Pasig, Parañaque, Quezon City, San Juan, Taguig, Valenzuela and the Municipality of Pateros.
  2. Conversion – 1 sq.meter  =  10.7639 sq.feet
  3. Conversion rate – US$1.00 =  P49.91 as of May 4, 2017 (please refer to the internet’s currency exchange table for the latest exchange rate)
  4. Measurements in the Philippines already include bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living & dining rooms – yes, they are small compared to American sizes!

I will try to present some condominium units to rent in Metro Manila which is available as of this writing, May 4, 2017.  We plan to rent first before we finally purchase a house in the Philippines.  We would like to make sure that we will like the area before we commit ourselves to the seller.  Maybe you should do that too, so you don’t find yourself caught in something you didn’t really like (that’s just my suggestion, you’re free to like it or not).

I am so pleased to find the website airbnb.com which can easily provide us with everything we need and more!

Using that site, I tried to make a comparative list for a two-bedroom, 1- bathroom condominium, with A/C, TV and pool, IN THE SUBURBS.

REMEMBER these are condominium units located in very nice suburban locations.  Units in lesser posh places might cost less, and those in the rural areas might even cost much less.  And these are only the places to stay for a couple of weeks, while we are “testing the waters.”

In my next post, I will research on the cost of food, transportation, and entertainment in the city.  From there we will find out if we can have a nice life in Manila and still have money left from our pension money!

Until then, this is your friend, Jessy doing the research for all of us future retirees from the US, and hoping we can all be neighbors in the Philippines when the time comes for our retirement!  Please send me your questions and suggestions so I can include them in my research as we find the best place to retire in the Philippines!
