Why Retire to the Philippines

Why, you say?

Because everything we need for our retirement is over there!

• the cost of living is amazingly affordable
• the climate is mild (not too hot/not too cold)
• living is “safe and secure” (like anywhere in the world)
• the people speak English, no need to learn a new language
• people are friendly, hospitable, warm and somewhat “Westernized”
• majority of the people are Christian, so there are no dietary laws to observe
• the country is lovely and the night life in the city is alive
• so many more other reasons!

This little country seems to be the best place for retirement!

Guimaras is considered one of the exotic islands in the Philippines. The original name was Himal-us but was changed to Guimaras after the folktale of the ill-fated lovers named Princess Guima and the slave Aras, who defied tradition for their romance.

The local people are also blessed with among the most beautiful beaches in Visayas. Largely undiscovered, many of the beaches are not heavily populated,  and thus are still very affordable and pleasant places to relax or to go snorkelling and fish spotting.

Small and very beautiful, Guimaras Island is just ten minutes by boat from the mainland city of IloIlo City. It has a population of approximately 250,000 but maintains five municipal divisions.  Guimaras is an agricultural island and has many tree plantations and has large daily markets where it is possible to buy meats, fruits and of course, fish.

There’s not a lot of settlers from outside of the island so the family ties remain very strong. It is not unheard of for one family member to have fifty first/second-cousins. The crime-rate is fairly low as everybody is known by everybody else and it is not easy to leave the island without being seen.

There are foreigners living on the island and at least one local community of foreigners has evolved who socialize once weekly. However, the island is still fairly unknown in internationally, so it is virtually undiscovered.

It has scenic and magnificent white sand beaches and island coves. It has the best diving site with its splendid coral reefs and marine life, which are impressing to the sight. The island is also famous for handicrafts like woven “buri” bags, mats, hats, and baskets. It is also famous for its lime industry, mining industry, fruit processing industry, and coconut industry.
